Frequently Asked Questions

What is the teeth whitening process?

Teeth Whitening is actually a bleaching process that lightens discolorations of tooth enamel. Prestige Smile Sonic White systems uses an effective whitening solution retained in 2 thermoforming trays (1 upper arch, 1 lower arch) worn over your teeth with the advanced blue spectrum LED light positioned over the trays to accelerate the whitening process from 20 minutes per day until you have reached your desired level of whitening. Using professional-strength whitening gel formulated with 5% hydrogen peroxide is the most widely used and most desirable path to establishing effective dental whitening.

How it removes stains?

Prestige Smiles Sonic White will remove most stains by generating a gentle action that whitens your teeth. As the active ingredient in the gel (5% hydrogen peroxide), is broken down, oxygen acts upon the stained organic deposits, which oxidizes them into a white color. This process makes the overall tooth colour closer to its natural unstained colour. Your tooth structure remains unchanged. Years of clinical tests have demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of this type of system. Over 95% of people treated achieve some level of tooth whiteing. Crowns, bridges, bondings, and fillings do not lighten.

Why is there bubbling of gel during application?

The bubbling is actually part of the whitening process as the surface stains are oxidising.

Is the whitening process permanent?

Your teeth have initially become stained due to consumption of foods and beverages. Upon the completion of your initial whitening process, your teeth will be restored to their natural white color. Smoking, eating certain foods, and drinking beverages like coffee, soda, and red wine will gradually darken teeth again. You may select to periodically whiten your teeth, thus reducing the likelihood of your teeth becoming stained again. After an initial treatment, most people do touchups at 6-12 months.

What about smoking or drinking coffee?

You can not smoke/drink coffee/red wine/tea within half hour of whitening. The teeth have pores like the skin and during whitening are more likely to uptake any stains ingested.

Who can benefit from tooth whitening?

Almost everyone. However, there are some cases where treatment may not be effective. Tooth lightening is ideal for patients who have healthy, unrestored teeth and would like a whiter, brighter smile. Tetracycline discolorations and artificial dental work are usually not greatly responsive to dental bleaching.

Is it safe to whiten my own teeth?

Yes, our in home whitening system is specially designed to be an easy-to-use system with detailed usage instructions. Over a decade of research indicates that whitening teeth with hydrogen peroxide is safe and effective. All of our products comply with ADA regulations.

How long does the whitening process take?

Results are dependent upon the individual characteristics of each person and the daily wear-time of the thermoforming trays, but most people usually see results after the first treatment. Maximum results occur over the next 14 days. For 24 hours following the whitening treatment, you should avoid coffee, tea, cola drinks, red wine, smoking, or consuming anything that could stain your teeth.

Are there any side effects?

In some cases teeth or gums can momentarily react sensitvely to the whitening application. This usually occurs in the first week, and cease to exist 1-3 days after interrupting the whitening treatment, make sure you are not applying the gel to gums. The sensitvity of your teeth and gums can be reduced by the following advice below:

  • Reduce usage time and/or frequency until the sensitivity subsides
  • Interrupt the application for 2-3 days, then continue the daily application
  • Interrupt the application and contact your doctor if sensitivity continues
  • Use mild toothpastes and soft toothbrushes to reduce gum irritations during the application.

Others may have nonspecific sensitivity in their teeth, gums, tongue, or throat.

If any of these symptoms are more than mild, discontinue the treatment until you speak to your dentist.

Why is the LED light not switching on?

The LED light arrives in Transit mode to preserve battery power, to activate open the battery cover and remove both batteries, remove the clear circular plastic insert resting on the metal prong, replace the batteries and lock the battery cover, you activation light is now ready for use.
